In 1964, Toby started his Hereford herd as a young teenager with one cow and her yearling heifer, for 4H and FFA projects, using funds he had earned working on his family’s farm.
By 1977, when he married Debby, he had about 35 head of registered Herefords. Total-herd performance records began with her help in 1978.
In 1989, adaptive management-intensive grazing started small, with one twelve-acre field divided into ten paddocks using electric fencing, and has expanded yearly. In 2003, we began direct marketing all-natural grass-finished beef.
Our 21st Century goal is to improve and maintain soil health (currently on about 300 acres of grazing land), along with human health for our beef customers, neighbors and family, to produce practical breeding stock that can function well on forages, and to produce consistently high-quality, flavorful beef on pasture, without any grain, year-round, using managed adaptive grazing techniques.
